FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — Sierra Leone has launched an initiative to strengthen its healthcare system through the local production of infection-prevention supplies.

The initiative was announced on August 18, 2026, at Youyi Building in Freetown by the Ministry of Health as part of its 300 Days of Activism programme.

The move is aimed at strengthening the country's capacity to produce essential supplies used to protect healthcare workers, patients and communities from infections.

Local manufacturing could also help Sierra Leone improve the reliability of medical supply chains and reduce vulnerabilities associated with dependence on imported healthcare products.

The initiative comes as the country continues to strengthen its health system and prepare for future public-health emergencies. Sierra Leone is also developing national capacity in disease surveillance and outbreak response, including a new advanced field epidemiology training programme launched in 2026.

Expanding local production could become an important step toward a more resilient Sierra Leone healthcare system, particularly during disease outbreaks and other health emergencies.
