GITEGA, Burundi — Burundi’s historic Union for National Progress (UPRONA) party has begun positioning itself for the 2027 presidential election after naming Abel Gashatsi as its candidate.

The decision was taken at the party’s national congress on August 8, where delegates also re-elected Olivier Nkurunziza as UPRONA president for another five-year term.

The congress was held under the theme of party and national unity, with UPRONA seeking to strengthen its position ahead of the presidential contest.

However, the party faces internal challenges. Several members reportedly interrupted the congress proceedings, alleging irregularities in the organisation of the meeting and internal elections. The protesters were subsequently suspended from party activities.

Despite the disagreements, UPRONA leadership has pledged to work toward greater unity and present the party as a serious political force.

Gashatsi’s nomination gives Burundi’s 2027 presidential race another important political dimension, particularly as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the election.

The coming months will show whether UPRONA can overcome internal divisions and build broader support before the campaign intensifies.
