Tanzania’s by-election campaign period begins on October 14, setting the stage for a series of local electoral contests ahead of voting scheduled for November 4, 2026.
The elections include a parliamentary by-election in Chamwino Constituency in Dodoma Region and council elections in 11 wards across mainland Tanzania, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The Chamwino parliamentary seat became vacant after former MP Deogratius John Ndejembi was appointed vice-president. The ward-level contests are being held to fill vacancies arising from the deaths of eight councillors and the resignations of three others.
INEC’s published timetable set October 13 as the candidate nomination date. Campaigning is scheduled to continue until November 3, the day before voters go to the polls.
The commission has reminded political parties, candidates and other participants to comply with Tanzania’s Constitution, electoral laws, campaign rules and the official election code throughout the process.
The coming weeks will be important for candidates seeking to win voter support in Chamwino and the 11 wards. Local concerns, campaign commitments and the conduct of political parties will be key issues to watch as election day approaches.
The November 4 results will determine who fills the vacant parliamentary and councillor positions. Further updates from the electoral commission and participating parties are expected as the campaign period progresses.
