Rwanda’s logistics sector is gaining a new international business connection after global shipping company Hapag-Lloyd strengthened its presence in Kigali to serve customers in Rwanda and Burundi.

The company announced that its new East African setup took effect on October 1, 2026, as part of a wider expansion of its operations across Africa. The move is intended to bring customer service and local market expertise closer to businesses that depend on international shipping.

As a landlocked country, Rwanda relies on regional transport corridors and seaports to move imports and exports. Hapag-Lloyd said its Kigali presence will complement existing services through Tanzania’s Port of Dar es Salaam, including shipping connections to India and the Far East.

The expansion could improve access to shipping support for Rwandan importers and exporters, including companies involved in manufacturing, retail, agriculture and regional trade. Businesses may benefit from closer contact with logistics specialists as they arrange international cargo movements.

The move also reflects growing competition among logistics providers to strengthen their presence in East African markets, where reliable transport connections are essential for cross-border commerce.

However, the new setup does not automatically guarantee lower freight charges or faster deliveries. The practical benefits for businesses will depend on service availability, transport capacity, shipping schedules and wider conditions along regional trade corridors.

For Rwanda, stronger local logistics support could help businesses navigate international supply chains and connect more efficiently with overseas markets.
