NIAMEY, Niger — Niger is stepping up efforts to attract international investment into its expanding oil and gas industry, with officials seeking greater cooperation with American companies and institutions.

During a meeting in Niamey on August 18, Nigerien petroleum officials presented a U.S. Embassy delegation with investment opportunities across the country’s petroleum sector.

The government is particularly interested in attracting capital, advanced technology and technical expertise for gas development, oil exploration, drilling and oilfield services. Opportunities were also identified in oil-sector data management and digital monitoring of crude export infrastructure.

Niger also wants cooperation in skills development and professional training, including potential partnerships with American universities and specialist institutions.

The outreach comes as Niger seeks to expand petroleum production and diversify its international investment partnerships.

The push for U.S. investment could open new opportunities for Niger’s energy industry, particularly in gas-powered electricity generation, urea production, oilfield services and technology.

The initiative highlights the growing importance of petroleum revenues and international investment to Niger’s economic development strategy.
