LILONGWE, Malawi — Malawi is stepping up efforts to transform its digital economy through a new three-year digital transformation plan focused on connectivity, digital public services and technology-driven economic growth.

The programme is designed to support Malawi’s ambition of significantly increasing internet access while expanding e-government services and digital solutions across the country.

Technology stakeholders have welcomed the renewed focus on digital innovation, with the ICT sector emphasizing the importance of maintaining investment in infrastructure and extending connectivity to underserved communities.

The government is also pursuing broader initiatives to develop digital skills and encourage young Malawians to create technology solutions addressing local challenges. A 2026 Huawei ICT programme, for example, is training young people in advanced ICT skills and supporting student innovation.

The new digital agenda could create fresh opportunities for Malawi’s technology startups, entrepreneurs and digitally skilled workforce, particularly as internet access and public digital services expand.

The country has also called for faster implementation of the One Africa Network, arguing that lower roaming and data costs would help strengthen regional digital integration.
