Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has blocked a proposed K3 billion procurement deal involving the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC), prompting renewed scrutiny of public spending and procurement practices.
According to a report published by Malawi24 on October 9, the deal involved the proposed supply of 100 tarpaulins by Maiden Investment, under a contract valued at approximately K2.97 billion.
The ACB reportedly issued a restriction notice directing ADMARC not to award the contract to the named company or another supplier without written consent from the bureau. The intervention comes as questions have been raised about the proposed cost of the materials.
The bureau is investigating suspected offences under Malawi’s Corrupt Practices Act. The investigation does not, by itself, establish that corruption occurred, and the concerns surrounding the contract require proper examination by the relevant authorities.
The development places public procurement transparency back in the spotlight, particularly as state-owned institutions face pressure to demonstrate responsible use of public funds.
Malawians will be watching for further updates on the investigation, the procurement process and any official explanation of the proposed contract value.
