Madagascar is preparing to strengthen its maritime surveillance capabilities following a new defence cooperation initiative with France that is expected to provide the country with approximately 100 surveillance drones.
The reported arrangement is intended to support monitoring of Madagascar’s extensive coastline and surrounding waters, where maritime security is important for protecting fishing resources, monitoring vessel movements and combating illegal activities.
The initiative forms part of broader security cooperation between Antananarivo and Paris. French officials have highlighted the strategic importance of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, a region where maritime routes and coastal security remain significant concerns.
Surveillance drones can help security personnel observe remote coastal areas, collect aerial information and identify suspicious activity more efficiently. Their effectiveness, however, will depend on training, maintenance, operational coordination and how the equipment is deployed.
The reported plan also comes as Madagascar seeks to strengthen the capabilities of its armed forces and improve cooperation with international partners.
The proposed drone support could mark a significant step in Madagascar’s maritime monitoring efforts, although the precise delivery schedule and operational details should be confirmed through official announcements.
