Ethiopia has completed a major international digital education initiative aimed at improving access to technology and strengthening learning opportunities for students across the country.

The UNESCO–Huawei Technology-Enabled Open Schools for All project concluded its Ethiopia programme after six years of work involving the Ministry of Education, educators and technology specialists.

The initiative helped schools use digital tools to support teaching and learning during ordinary school periods and disruptions, including the COVID-19 pandemic and climate-related emergencies.

The closing event in Addis Ababa brought together education officials, UNESCO representatives, Huawei and other partners to review the programme’s achievements and discuss how its results could be maintained and expanded.

Digital learning tools can help students access educational materials, support teachers and make learning more resilient when classrooms face interruptions. However, continued progress depends on reliable internet access, suitable devices, teacher training and long-term investment.

The programme’s conclusion comes as Ethiopia seeks to strengthen its digital skills and technology capacity. Extending successful approaches to more schools could help reduce gaps in educational access and prepare students for an increasingly digital economy.

The next challenge will be turning the project’s lessons into sustainable digital learning opportunities for more Ethiopian students, particularly those in communities with limited connectivity and educational resources.
