Ethiopia has taken a major political step after parliament approved 22 ministerial nominees, formally establishing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s new cabinet as the country begins a fresh five-year government term.
One of the most closely watched appointments is Fitsum Assefa Adela as Minister of Finance, replacing Ahmed Shide, who has become Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives. Fitsum previously led the Ministry of Planning and Development.
The government has also appointed Frehiwot Tamiru, the former chief executive of state-owned Ethio Telecom, as Minister of Innovation and Technology. Mohammed Edris has been named Minister of Defence.
The cabinet changes come as Ethiopia works to manage external debt, pursue economic reforms and encourage greater private investment. The government has also reorganised parts of its administrative structure, including renaming the Ministry of Planning and Development as the Ministry of National Strategy.
The new appointments will be closely watched by businesses, public institutions and international partners as the administration sets its priorities for the coming years.
The cabinet reshuffle marks an important stage in Ethiopia’s political transition, with finance, technology and national strategy among the key portfolios facing major expectations.
