ASMARA, Eritrea — Eritrea is reinforcing its focus on primary healthcare and health security through greater participation in regional health-policy discussions.

Eritrea’s Ambassador to Kenya, Beyene Russom, represented the Ministry of Health at the Fourth Regional Ministerial Steering Committee meeting in Dar es Salaam on August 18. The meeting focused on health security and sovereignty, maternal and child health, primary healthcare and innovative investment.

During the meeting, Eritrea highlighted its community-based approach to primary healthcare, which relies on health workers and local services to reach populations outside major urban centres.

The development comes as the World Health Organization continues to highlight Eritrea’s progress in expanding essential health services, immunisation and maternal and child healthcare.

Eritrea’s emphasis on community-based healthcare could remain an important part of efforts to improve access to essential services and strengthen national health resilience.

Regional cooperation is also expected to remain important as African countries seek more sustainable health financing and stronger domestic health systems.
