Uganda is exploring plans to establish a major artificial intelligence (AI) technology hub after President Yoweri Museveni held talks with US technology investor Mehamood Hosein about expanding the country’s digital infrastructure and innovation sector.
The meeting took place at State House in Entebbe and focused on opportunities for cooperation in AI, digital transformation and advanced computing infrastructure.
Hosein, founder and chairman of Hive Global Group, presented a proposal to establish HIVE Uganda and The Global AI Village. The vision includes advanced computing centres, reliable energy infrastructure, research facilities, technology development and digital skills training.
The proposed initiative aims to help Uganda move beyond using imported technology towards developing and exporting AI-powered services to international markets.
According to the discussions reported by State House, the project could also create opportunities for young Ugandans through technology education, research, entrepreneurship and the development of new digital industries.
Reliable electricity would be essential to the proposal because large-scale AI computing facilities require substantial and consistent power supplies. Attracting private investment, building technical expertise and creating a supportive business environment would also be important to its implementation.
If realised, the initiative could open new opportunities for Uganda’s technology sector, including software development, data services and AI-related businesses. However, the proposal remains at the discussion stage, and detailed investment commitments, construction schedules and implementation milestones have not yet been publicly confirmed.
The discussions reflect Uganda’s ambition to participate more actively in the global AI economy. The next important step will be determining how the proposed investment would be financed, developed and translated into practical opportunities for local businesses and technology professionals.
