NIAMEY, Niger — Nigerien security authorities have intensified their fight against drug trafficking following a major operation across the capital that resulted in 331 people being detained.

The seventh edition of the “Tamisée” operation, conducted by the Central Office for the Suppression of Illicit Drug Trafficking (OCRTIS) alongside security forces, targeted all five municipal districts of Niamey and areas along the Niger River.

Authorities also screened 182 drivers operating minibuses, taxis, trucks, buses and tricycles. Twenty-five drivers tested positive for psychoactive substances, according to the reported operation results.

Security forces reportedly seized quantities of suspected narcotics and other substances, while some suspects were transferred to specialist drug-trafficking investigators for further proceedings.

The operation highlights Niger’s intensified effort to disrupt drug networks and improve public safety in the capital, particularly around transport routes and areas identified as drug-selling or consumption locations.

Authorities are expected to continue targeted operations as part of efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and drug use in Niamey.
