Malawi’s technology sector is being urged to strengthen women’s participation in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and digital innovation, as industry leaders call for greater collaboration and professional development.
The call was made during the ICT Association of Malawi (ICTAM) Women in ICT Conference in Blantyre, which opened on October 8, 2026, for a two-day programme focused on leadership in the AI and cybersecurity era.
Stella Senti, Director of ESCOM Optic Fibre Communications, encouraged women working in information and communications technology to build stronger professional networks, exchange knowledge and develop practical solutions that support Malawi’s digital economy.
She highlighted the importance of continuously upgrading technical skills as emerging technologies reshape workplaces, businesses and public services.
ICTAM Executive Member responsible for Women, Elizabeth Mwale, said the conference provides an opportunity for women to share experiences, discuss challenges and identify ways to strengthen their role in the technology industry.
The push comes as AI adoption and cybersecurity become increasingly important to Malawi’s digital transformation. Greater participation by women could help widen the pool of technology talent and bring more perspectives into the development of digital services.
The conference also challenges traditional perceptions that ICT careers are primarily for men, highlighting opportunities for women across government departments, telecommunications, cybersecurity and technology businesses.
Sustained progress will depend on access to technical training, mentorship, leadership opportunities and supportive professional networks. The event places these issues at the centre of discussions about Malawi’s future digital workforce.
